2. What are sirtuins?
Sirtuins are a family of enzyme proteins found throughout our bodies. Seven main sirtuin types have been identified that interact at a gene level. They play key roles in cellular repair, mitochondrial function, fat mobilization, and expression of anti-aging genes. Insufficient sirtuin activity has been tied to weight gain, disease risk, and even accelerated aging. Certain plant polyphenols directly activate sirtuins by encouraging the enzymes’ repair and regulatory roles.
Increasing sirtuin levels via nutrient-packed foods may help manage weight, healthspan, and lifespan.
