Some research indicates intermittent fasting can sharpen focus, improve memory recall, and support cognitive function through its effects on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
BDNF is a protein involved in neuron growth and learning. Fasting and ketosis is associated with increased BDNF levels. The brain appears to adapt to burning ketones more efficiently after a period of intermittent fasting.
In animal studies, intermittent fasting protected against cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. The fasting-induced ketosis provides alternative energy for brain cells while enhancing cognition and mood. More human research is still needed.
