Edamame Can Alleviate Menopausal Symptoms
Menopause is the phase in a woman’s life when she stops menstruating. Usually, it happens around 51, but this number is different for every woman.
Symptoms can include hot flashes, mood swings, sweating, urinary incontinence, weight gain, bone loss, and breast and skin changes.
However, several studies suggest that soy products and isoflavones can reduce these side effects (25,26, 27, 28).
Edamame and other soy products help to alleviate these side effects.
Experts say that edamame and other foods made from soya can alleviate menopausal symptoms like hot flushes.
One study found that women who took 135 mg of isoflavones a day for a week (or the equivalent of 68 grams of soybeans a day) reduced their menopausal symptoms (29).
However, not all women can benefit from the advantages of edamame.
Interestingly, not all women respond well to the isoflavones in soy. It depends mainly on the intestinal flora.
Certain types of bacteria convert isoflavones into a compound called equol that alleviates menopausal symptoms (30).
